Governance

The Principal, as CEO of the School, reports to the School Board of St John’s Grammar School. The School is owned and operated by St John’s Grammar School - an incorporated association, under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985.

The Constitution of the Association contains provisions about membership, general meetings, voting, the appointment of Governors, the powers and duties of Governors, the role of the Principal and other matters. The business and enterprise of St John’s Grammar School is overseen by a Board of Governors. The Constitution requires that there be no more than twelve Governors, and contains provisions for the appointment and removal of Governors.

The Constitution requires that the Board consist of two people nominated by the Diocesan Council of the Anglican Church of the Diocese of Adelaide and Governors nominated by the Board. The Archbishop of the Diocese of Adelaide is the visitor of the School.

The role of the Board

The role of the Board is to oversee the management and business of the Association, and in particular to:

Appoint the Principal and Administrator and monitor performance
Establish the vision and strategic direction of the School
Support the school management in the implementation of that vision and strategic direction
Ensure that the resources necessary for the achievement of agreed goals are available

How the Board operates

The Board meets regularly through the year and works closely to support the School management. An increasing amount of the Board’s work is conducted through the Governors in standing committees and interim working groups, according to the issues at hand. Chairs are appointed to Committees based on their skills, experience, interests and availability.

The Board seeks to be composed of a diversity of Governors who have the necessary skills, professional qualifications, character, personal attributes and commitment to enable the realisation of the School’s Vision and Mission. The Principal is a member of the Board and its Committees in a non-voting capacity. The Administrator attends all Board meetings and is its Secretary and Public Officer.
