Year 10
St John's Grammar
The first year of Senior School, Year 10 at St John’s Grammar School has been crafted specifically to allow students to seek their own path and build authentic connections with the world beyond school.
By stepping outside their comfort zone, the Year 10 students begin preparing for their future by planning and investigating, and participating in Work Experience, expos and investigations. A highlight for many in Year 10 is camp experience at Mylor which sees students participate in challenging team building activities.
We also offer enrichment and extension for students who are looking for further opportunities to excel, with our flexible timetabling allowing students to complete subjects above their year level. Wellbeing continues to be prominent in Year 10 through the Purposely Well program and passions are nurtured through an extensive extra-curricular program of activities.
A Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program enables Years 7 to 12 students to bring a laptop of their choice for use on the School’s network and students are also given the opportunity to begin University and TAFE studies while being supported at St John’s Grammar through flexible timetabling.
Year 10 Curriculum
The core curriculum includes English, Science, Mathematics, Purposely Well, Health and Physical Education, and a semester each of Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) and History. A variety of electives are available and for those interested in pursuing a wider range of languages, our relationship with the South Australian Secondary School of Languages (SASSL) ensures a broad range of Language subjects to choose from. Many students will narrow their elective choices to pursue subjects of strength and interest with many being trials for further SACE studies. Many students will tackle Stage 1 subjects in Year 10 (for example: Maths Studies, Japanese, Indonesian, Music, Media Studies and Design Technology).
At St John’s Grammar, opportunities exist for combining study at school with a work placement, or TAFE enrolment. A number of students take up this option from Year 10, while playing a full role in the life of the school, and in House activities. All Year 10 students take part in a Work Experience placement.
To read more about the subjects on offer, read the curriculum information on our Senior School page.
Signature experiences in Year 10
The Year 10 Camp to Mylor is an important part in fostering strong bonds between peers and supports the transition into the Senior School.
Students engage in a range of activities from raft making, archery, bridge building, orienteering and other team-based activities. The outcome of these activities is to develop strong bonds as a cohort, to connect meaningfully with each other, as well as discover their own personal strengths.
Signature experiences in Year 10
Year 10 students are eligible to apply for special trips to the APY Lands and the Japanese Language and Cultural Trip.
APY Lands
In partnership with the Pipalyatjara Anangu School in the APY Lands, the students have the opportunity to build relationships with the local students and develop a stronger understanding of the cultural and social lives of the Pipalyatjara community.
The purpose of this trip is to foster a relationship between St John’s Grammar School students and the students of the Pipalyatjara Anangu School, and to increase their inter-cultural understanding. Students spend time in class as well as taking various excursions around the local area.
Japanese Language and Cultural Trip
Students studying Japanese are eligible to attend the Japanese Language and Cultural Trip to advance their language learning. A week of homestay at our sister school, Yasufuruichi in Hiroshima provides an immersive cultural experience, followed by sight-seeing across several destinations including Himeji, Kyoto, Nara, Mount Fuji and Tokyo.
