Year 11
St John's Grammar
Year 11 has a focus on our students further developing leadership and mentoring skills that will enable them to have impact in their futures. An extensive leadership program is provided for all students and our School Leaders are elected (School Captains, House Captains and a variety of roles including captains, ambassadors and leaders).
Mentoring opportunities with younger students are available with our Senior students working with our Middle School students, and often our Junior School students too.
School trips to local, national and international destinations provide wonderful opportunities for growth.
In their studies, St John’s Grammar students will be honing in on their passions and considering their preferred pathways for subjects and fields they wish to pursue in Year 12 and beyond. All students complete their compulsory SACE credits for Literacy and Numeracy, and may choose to study the Stage 2 Research Project. Students also have the opportunity to undertake certain Stage 2 electives, giving them insights into what is involved in their final year of study.
At St John’s Grammar, opportunities exist for combining study at school with Vocational Education or Training (VET) or TAFE enrolment. A number of students take up this option in Year 11, while also maintaining their commitment to a school life and the many opportunities for connection and a sense of belonging through House activities and our extensive extra curricular program.
Year 11 Curriculum
With English and Mathematics as the two core subjects, there is wide scope to choose an exciting suite of subjects to allow students to strive for future careers and areas of interest and passion. The range of electives is extensive and caters to student demand. All students complete their compulsory SACE credits for Literacy and Numeracy, and may choose to study the Stage 2 Research Project. Students also have the opportunity to undertake certain Stage 2 electives, giving them insights into what is involved in their final year of study.
To read more about the subjects on offer, read the curriculum information on our Senior School page.
Signature experiences in Year 11
We know that Senior School is when students create their own path, and develop their passions, strengths and skills, which is why we support every student to negotiate career and tertiary study pathways.
Students are encouraged to explore and are connected with tertiary providers to ask questions, research and discover the many post-school options available to them before they make their final decisions in Year 12. A St John’s Grammar Careers Expo with a number of career and tertiary exhibitors is held mid-year on campus for students to explore a variety of future pathways.
From Year 11, students may be eligible to study a university subject of interest through programs with Flinders and Adelaide University. This opportunity provides SACE credit as well as a pathway into further tertiary studies in Year 12 and beyond.
Signature experiences in Year 11
Mid-way through the year, the Year 11s can nominate and be elected for School leadership roles. As well as School Captain and Vice Captain, students can nominate for roles such as Wellbeing Ambassador, Sports Captain, Reconciliation Ambassador, International Student Captain and more.
Commencing their leadership mid-way through the year allows for a Semester of handover with the incumbent leaders.
In addition, the opportunity for Year 11s to visit the Junior School to run and coordinate student-interest led lunchtime activity programs provides an alternative and less formal leadership activity.
3-day challenge camp
Fostering collaboration and challenge, the Year 11 Camp offers a rigorous program that develops resilience, strengthens bonds and provides opportunities to connect with their peers. Coupled with the opportunity to reflect on their school journey so far, and plan for their final two years of schooling, this Camp is an invaluable experience.
Year 11 students are eligible to apply for special trips including the Japanese and Indonesian Language and Cultural Trips as well as the Ski Trip.
Ski Trip
As a special trip reserved for Senior School students, the Ski Trip sees students travel interstate to Falls Creek. The five-day trip offers skiing or snowboarding during the day and a range of group activities during the evenings.
Japanese Language and Cultural Trip
Students studying Japanese are eligible to attend the Japanese Language and Cultural Trip to advance their language learning. A week of homestay at our sister school, Yasufuruichi in Hiroshima provides an immersive cultural experience, followed by sight-seeing across several destinations including Himeji, Kyoto, Nara, Mount Fuji and Tokyo.
Indonesian Language and Cultural Trip
Students studying Indonesian are eligible to attend the Indonesian Language and Cultural Trip. Spending three days with our sister school, MAN Insan Cendekia, allows students to experience all that Indonesian school life has to offer before exploring the city of Makassar and the various tourist destinations along the way. The trip concludes in Bali where students partake in Batik and offering making lessons as well as fun and adventure at Waterbom Park.
