Junior School Swimming Carnival
Event Nominations
The carnival is designed to allow all students to participate regardless of swimming ability. Students should carefully consider their own swimming ability and the distance of races before nominating for events. Novelty events are designed for less capable swimmers. Strong swimmers entering races won’t be granted places in novelty events over students who nominate for novelty events alone.
Medal criteria
Champion and Runner-Up medals will be awarded to the boy and girl in each age group (8 & 9 Year Old, 10 Year Old, 11 Year Old and 12 Years & Over) earning the most and second-most individual House points. Age group Champions will be decided on the results of Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle events. Students wishing to be in the running for the medals must nominate for the 50m category in ALL THREE of these events (with the exception of the 8 & 9 Year Old age group, in which all three races are only 25m).
For age groups other than 8 & 9 Year Olds a 25m Freestyle event is offered for those who are not confident swimming 50m. This event is not included in the individual medal points tally but does count for overall House points. Students entering the 50m Freestyle event may not also enter the 25m Freestyle event.
Students may enter the Open Butterfly event in order to gain more points for their House if they are able to swim this stroke but this event will not count towards individual points for medals.
All students are encouraged to nominate for at least two events, keeping in mind that, to be in the running for age group Champion and Runner-Up medals, swimmers must swim in the 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle events (25m for 8 & 9 Year Olds).
Restrictions
Students may only enter events in their age category. Age categories for events are defined by the age a student will be on 31 December 2024. However, for Year 4 students and above who are young for their Year Level (eg. A Year 4 student who turns 9 in 2024, when their peers are turning 10 in 2024), parents can indicate if your child wants to compete against their Age Group or Peers (Year Level).
