In Term 3, St John’s Grammar will be hosting a group of approximately 15 Japanese students and one teacher from our Sister School, Yasufuruichi High School in Hiroshima. This annual exchange has been occurring for the past 15 years, with many students creating lifelong friendships and being able to visit their buddies on our biannual Japan Trip. The Japanese students will come to school with their Host Brother/Sister every day. They will have a mix of intensive English lessons, excursions, visits to specialist classes, and lessons with their Host Brother/Sister. On weekends, families are encouraged to involve them in typical daily life.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all students to make new friends, build global connections, and learn about Japanese culture. As the students are here to practise English, it is not a requirement for anyone in your family to be studying Japanese. Of course, for those studying Japanese, hosting provides a great chance to practise the language in meaningful, real‑life situations.
Some more information to note:
• The student does not have to have their own bedroom
• The Group Coordinator provides families with cultural information and 24/7 support throughout the program
• Families are supported financially for hosting a student
• We will have one Host Family Information Night a few weeks prior to hosting, and a farewell party at school on the evening before the students depart
If you would like to host a student from Thursday 23 July to Thursday 6 August 2026, please email Heather Jackson hjackson@stjohns.sa.edu.au by Friday 29 May.
