Reception and Year 1

These are introductory years with students doing a lot of singing, moving and playing of percussion instruments in class.

Students at these year levels listen to a variety of music and enjoy a number of musical performances during the year.

Year 2

A recorder program is offered during Semester One to give students some basic experience in playing music together and beginning to read music notation.

If you have your own descant recorder at home, you may send it along. The School will supply everyone else with a recorder and the small cost of $8 will be added to your fees.

Year 3

The Year 3 Music Program involves the compulsory learning of a stringed instrument.  This runs for one hour every Wednesday morning with three tutors and St John’s Grammar Band Director, Leith Stutterd.

Towards the end of Year 2,  students are asked to nominate their preference of instrument from violin, viola or cello. Evenly sized groups for each instrument will then be formed, taking into account preferences, numbers and the children’s sizes.

Instruments will be provided by the School, with a $50 bond per student, which will be refunded at the end of the year upon return of the instrument in good condition. If you have your own instrument and wish your child to use that please let Jenny Chapman know.

Year 3 students will also have a regular choir lesson with Jenny Chapman and are invited to join the Year 3/4 Choir which rehearses before School on Wednesday mornings, 8 – 8.50am in the Music Room.

Year 4

Year 4 students are encouraged to continue learning their stringed instrument after a highly successful year in the Year 3 Strings Program.

All students are eligible to take part in the Year 4 Strings Ensemble which rehearses during School hours. For this, each student will need to either own an instrument or hire one. A number of instruments are available for hire from the School at a cost of $30/term. Please email Jenny Chapman for more information. To keep up with the expectation of the Ensemble it is highly recommended that private music tuition is continued in your child’s instrument.
