In early June, a team of 50 Senior School students and six staff head to Melbourne for an action-packed weekend of sport! This new experience is the work of our PE department who wanted to provide our senior stars a sporting experience that was unique and exciting. It will also serve to be a wonderful bonding experience for all the teams and the staff attending.

St John’s will be hosted by Hume Grammar, a new school situated in Mickleham on the western side of Melbourne’s outer perimeter. Behind the partnership are former St John’s staff members Tim and Andrea Agnew who are part of the Leadership team at Hume. The school is a touch smaller than ours but growing quickly and are in the process of building more sporting facilities. They are very excited about the venture.

Our teams fly over on Friday afternoon and return Sunday lunchtime. We are staying in the heart of Melbourne. On the Saturday, teams play two or three games in a range of sports: volleyball, netball, basketball and soccer. On Saturday night, the group get to see a game of AFL at Etihad and a final of the National Netball series. On Sunday there has been a tour of the Victorian Sports Institute (at the MCG) organised before a quick dash to the airport to fly home.

Long term, it may well be the case that Hume travel to us as well. The plan is to cement a sister-school relationship in the first instance. The experience ties in with a plan to promote meaningful and exciting sports opportunities for our talented stars. Knockout competitions for our elite teams, Anglican Cup, Volleyball carnivals, Triathlon Days, the re-introduction of a swimming program and SSSSA Cycling championships are a handful of opportunities that feature on our busy sporting calendar.
