Curriculum and Subject Choices
Middle School: Years 7 to 9
Our programs in the Middle School greatly enrich students’ learning and help students to successfully transition from Primary, to Middle, and eventually to Senior School. Because all aspects of adolescents’ lives are changing, it is essential that we offer a safe, stimulating and rewarding environment. The 7 – 9 curriculum allows students to consolidate and build skills in their core subjects, while also providing an excellent range of elective choices.
Our Year 7 program is designed to foster students’ strengths and introduce them to new, exciting areas of learning. Students experience all core and many of the elective subjects that the School has to offer. Our students will be able to determine where their interests lie and begin considering their study pathways for elective subjects in the years ahead.
In Years 8, students build upon the knowledge and understanding they developed in Year 7. A broader choice of elective subjects allows students to experiment with, and begin to specialise in, certain subject areas. Students continue to develop their skills in Languages, studying a full year of Indonesian or Japanese.
Year 9 – the final year of Middle School – is an important, action-packed 12 months at St John’s Grammar School. The core subjects allow students to develop comprehensive skills and knowledge in English, Science, Mathematics, Physical Education and Humanities. Students choose four semesters of elective subjects and undertake The Rite Journey; a highly rewarding course that leads to the Year 9 camp in the Flinders Ranges.
Senior School: Years 10 to 12
The academic curriculum in our Senior School is broad and challenging. Students are able to complete the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and undertake Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways. The academic curriculum comprises a comprehensive selection of electives in Year 10, and over twenty subjects for SACE Stage 2 (Year 12).
Our senior students are actively encouraged to continue their involvement in sport, and other co-curricular activities. We believe that by providing these opportunities our young adults grow in school spirit, teamwork, maturity, independent thinking and in social responsibility. At the same time, they develop loyalty to their School, and to their peers.
In Year 10, students begin to investigate citizenship and service, as part of which they undertake Stage 1 Personal Learning Plan (PLP). This year long course focuses on contribution to the community and volunteering, as well as career and work education and identifying strengths, interests and personal development.
It is in this year that students will narrow their elective choices to pursue subjects of strength and interest with many being trials for further SACE studies. Many students will tackle Stage 1 subjects in Year 10 (for example: Maths Studies, Japanese, Indonesian, Music, Media Studies and Design Technology).
The Year 10 program also opens up opportunities to extend their thinking about self and others with numerous travel options and the Citizenship project. This project demands that students commit to raising awareness, support and funds for a service organisation of their choice.
Many foreign languages can be studied from Year 10. We have a relationship with the South Australian Secondary School of Languages (SASSL) where students can choose a language and be taught in a three hour lesson once per week from 4.30pm, at an offsite location. Students who choose to do this may study one less subject from our curriculum, or treat it as an extra subject. If this is of interest, an appointment can be made with the Leader of Learning and Curriculum to discover all of the details.
At St John’s Grammar, opportunities exist for combining study at school with a work placement, or TAFE enrolment. A number of students take up this option from Year 10, while playing a full role in the life of the school, and in House activities. All Year 10 students take part in both a three-day Work Experience placement and a three-day Citizenship and Service Program.
Year 11 is the year of leadership. In this year our School Leaders are elected (School Captains, House Captains, Co-Curricular captains and AWARE leaders). School trips to local, national and international destinations provide wonderful opportunities for growth.
In their studies, St John’s Grammar students will be honing in on their passions and considering their preferred pathways for subjects and fields they wish to pursue in Year 12 and beyond. All students complete their compulsory SACE credits for Literacy and Numeracy, and may choose to study the Stage 2 Research Project. Students also have the opportunity to undertake certain Stage 2 electives, giving them insights into what is involved in their final year of study.

Year 12 is a special year for our students. Highlights include the Retreat, Formal and Graduation celebrations. While their focus is on achieving their best, our Year 12 students remain heavily involved in School life. They play leadership and mentoring roles in our Houses, bands, ensembles, choirs and drama productions. They are pivotal is helping our sports teams thrive.
St John’s Grammar students typically choose four or five Stage 2 subjects in Year 12, which they study for the full year. They will also undertake the Research Project if they have not completed it previously in Year 11.
Year 12 is for many students the most rewarding of their schooling experience. Students demonstrate the comprehensive skills and knowledge they have developed in their years of schooling, studying subjects they care about and that lead to their chosen future study and career pathways.
