University Study. Is it for your child?

This Wednesday we had a senior school assembly around the theme of ”University Study. Is it for you?” Representatives from Flinders University and the University of Adelaide explained how secondary school students can study first year subjects at university whilst still at school and have it count towards their ATAR and potentially a future undergraduate degree. The very favourable translation into ATAR was also outlined. Our current students who are so successfully engaging in the Flinders University Extension Studies and University of Adelaide Headstart programs then shared their experiences. I will be calling for expressions of interest in these programs for 2020, next term.

2018 Old Scholar and Medicine student at the University of Adelaide, Ali Teubner, talked about making the transition from school to university and gave sound and practical advice on how to navigate those first few weeks. Then 2011 Old Scholar, Pat Capon, explained the different levels of degrees and what to consider when making choices around what to study. Pat is currently a PhD Chemistry candidate at the University of Adelaide, undertaking research in “Fluorescent materials for biological applications”.

Flinders University offer alternative pathways into their courses through 60% weighting of Research Project or uniTEST results if they are better than a student’s ATAR alone. Last week, the University of Adelaide announced that they are now offering a Subject-Based Entry Pathway for applicants to the University of Adelaide, for 2020 entry and beyond. Tony Duggan outlined this process to our students during this assembly. Should you be interested in further information please click here.

*Please note: this pathway is only applicable to a select range of degrees.
