Welcome from the Junior School

Welcome back everyone and a warm welcome to our new families. In Reception 16 children from our ELC joined us along with 2 children new to the school (Hamish Langmaid and Skye Star). The following children also joined us in other year levels. In Year 2 Ella Sawyer and James Robinson. Year 3, Callum Hunter, Archie McDonald and Elizabeth Perry. Year 4, Emma Robinson, Josh Murphy and Williem Hoffman. Year 5, Mark Porter-Wright and Abella Seaman. Year 6, Juliette Hoffman, Sammy Crackett and Annika van den Berg. We wish them and their families a happy and productive time in the Junior School.

We also welcome Holly Neilson, our new Year 2 teacher. She has most recently worked at St Ignatius and Pembroke and in Perth and has already stamped herself as a teacher of excellence. The ELC has seen some physical and structural changes as well as personnel additions. Mrs Penny Kerr and Ms Bettina Abrams have joined the ELC teaching team while Ms Ann Gacic, Ms Tash Herr and Ms Noleen Stewart have been employed as co-educators for the centre.

During the days (weeks for some) leading up to the first day staff have been busy preparing their rooms to make them welcoming and comfortable learning spaces. They have also been undertaking professional learning activities. The whole staff were fortunate to hear futurist and scientist, Dr Kristin Alford, the Director of the Science Creativity Education (SciCEd) Studio on North Terrace. She was provocative and thought provoking and dared us to be preposterous in our educational thinking.

You may be aware that we are venturing into the exciting paradigm of student agency and our staff invited our School Leaders including our new Junior School leaders, Blake, Karpagha and Lucy to join us and discuss ways of giving students true voice. Their contributions were insightful and when reporting back to the whole staff they did so with alacrity and confidence.

Staff also had sessions on well-being for children called Growing with Gratitude. Then had a Mathematics workshop to ensure we are using the best possible methods to teach Maths and to support children in this area. Our SSOs joined us to ensure consistency of approach.

Information about the Launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) will be found elsewhere on our website but needless to say it is promising to be a significant and important event in which the whole school will participate. Details to come.

2017 promises to be another significant, enjoyable and fruitful year for all members of our school community.
