THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY I am grateful that St John’s allowed me to visit the ANU for three days recently. 2007 student, Jessica Taylor, began at ANU this year, studying the double degree of Law and Asian Studies, with the ultimate goal of working for the DFAT or the UN. Along with approximately 3,500 other students, Jess is living on campus, and has found that she has settled in very quickly. The campus is self-contained with low-rise buildings set in beautiful grounds of 145 hectares and Canberra’s city centre is a short walk away.
The ANU is a most impressive university. It is the only Australian university to be under Commonwealth legislation and although it is the third smallest university in Australia, it receives the third highest funding. The ANU is consistently ranked as one of Australia’s top universities and among the top research universities in the world. It is ranked by DEST in the top band for teaching excellence across its entire teaching profile.
There are about 6,500 undergraduate students of a total 13,000 students (ANU has a far larger proportion of post-graduate students than most universities). ANU has international links with leading universities in Asia, Europe, the UK and the United States and many students study overseas as part of their programs.
ANU is organised around seven Colleges, linking research and teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and higher degree levels. The Colleges are: ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences ANU College of Asia and the Pacific ANU College of Business and Economics ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science ANU College of Law ANU College of Medicine and Health Sciences ANU College of Science
I recommend that high-achieving St John’s students consider the ANU for tertiary study, as the pastoral care, opportunities for internships and overseas study, and the research opportunities are outstanding.
The Careers Area displays a large collection of materials from The ANU, including scholarship opportunities.
