School entry for 5 year olds

Published: 16 Apr 2012

After reading the weekend newspapers and listening to Ian Henschke on the radio this morning about the SA Government Education sector's plans to only have one intake per year for 5 year olds into Reception classes, I thought that it was timely to inform you that we will continue with our current policy of a mid-year intake for our Early Learning Centre and Reception classes.

We believe that children's learning needs are best met by our current practices and hence they will continue.  Children who are born prior to February 14 may enrol in the classes that commence at the beginning of the year and those born after this date will enrol in the mid-year intake class.

We do conduct individual interviews with the parents and child prior to enrolment to assess readiness for commencement.  At times enrolment may be deferred for 6 months to ensure a child's successful experience, or brought forward to the earlier intake.  The interviews for entry into Reception classes are conducted by the Head of Junior School, Frank Ali, and Sally Galaz, our Early Learning Centre Co-ordinator, also meets all children for ELC entry.

Please feel free to share this information with families who have young children affected by the Government's proposed enrolment intake change.
