Behaviour management
Behaviour management at St John’s Grammar School is based upon a principle of care and concern for the welfare of every child. The policy is intended to provide a consistent approach for teachers to assist students to develop appropriate behaviours and life skills - actions which are highly valued both within the School and wider community.
A foundational objective is to establish and maintain learning environments of the highest quality. There is a need to create a learning culture within the School which incorporates, among many things, a sense of caring, service and respect for others.
When action is required to quell behaviour that impacts in a negative way on the learning opportunities and impedes that quest for a caring and respecting school community, the implementation of positive and thorough management strategies is vital. These strategies need to generate within our students:
• Positive and meaningful learning experiences
• Long term behaviour resolutions
• Stronger working, respecting relationships with teachers and other students
• Individual responsibility
• Sensible decision-making of behaviour
Our actions veer away from the overuse of immediate threats and negative consequences. The focus shifts to reinforcing and applauding positive, appropriate behaviour. Behaviour management is an on-going component of every teacher’s work portfolio.
Behaviour support is a shared responsibility and the system encourages the regular and immediate involvement of parents. A focus of our shared actions is on dealing with the causes of poor, disruptive behaviour. The forging of close, caring relationships with students combined with prudent and thorough approaches to behaviour support are essential in promoting positive, long-term resolutions.
