Junior School Curriculum

The core curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Society & Environment, Science, Technology, Health Education, Music, the Arts, Physical Education, Religious and Values Education, and a Language other than English (Japanese from Year 5).

Religious Education is offered within the framework of the Anglican Church and the loving, respectful and caring philosophy of the school. Through the example of the Chaplain and all staff, each child has models of positive, Christian living.

Physical Education at St John’s Grammar aims to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity. All students participate in weekly sessions with the specialist Physical Education Teacher. A wide range of physical activities is used to assist in the students’ physical and social development with a major emphasis on sportsmanship and positive lifestyle attitudes.

Inter-school sporting competitions are conducted with the support of the Sports Committee, which is a body of interested parents and teachers. St John’s Grammar competes in a range of sports such as softball, cricket, basketball, netball and soccer as well as sending teams to SAPSASA swimming, athletics and cross-country competitions. Students in Year 3 through to Year 6 have the opportunity to participate in the inter-school competitions. All practices and matches are conducted or supervised by St John’s Grammar teaching staff.

A specialist teacher teaches Japanese to Year 5 and 6 classes. We aim to promote an awareness and to broaden students’ knowledge of cultural diversity within our community at all year levels. After school dance lessons are available throughout the year and are very popular with our boys and girls R-6.

The St John’s Grammar Junior Campus places great importance on the teaching of numeracy and literacy. We also support students in the development of skills in technology and computing, communication, social living and problem solving. This helps equip children to be effective and articulate participants in an ever-changing society.
